What’s Mannitol used for?

1. Mannitol is used as an intravenous osmotic diuretic to reduce intracranial pressure associated with cerebral edema and to lower elevated intraocular pressure unresponsive to other therapies.
2. Inhaled mannitol is FDA-approved as an add-on maintenance treatment to improve pulmonary function in cystic fibrosis and for evaluating bronchial hyperresponsiveness in patients without clinically apparent asthma.
3. As a food additive (E421), Mannitol serves as a low-calorie sweetener, bulking agent, and texturizer in sugar-free products such as chewing gum, candies, and diabetic foods due to its non-cariogenic properties and minimal impact on blood glucose.

Where does Mannitol come from?

1. Mannitol occurs naturally in a wide variety of plants, including pumpkins, celery, onions, olives, and fresh mushrooms, as well as in brown algae, where Mannitol can constitute up to 20-30% of the algae's dry weight.
2. Mannitol is commercially produced by the catalytic hydrogenation of sugars such as fructose or glucose, or by extraction from natural sources such as the dried sap (manna) of the manna ash tree, which can contain up to 50% Mannitol.
3. Mannitol is a 6-carbon sugar alcohol (C₆H₁₄O₆) and is the D-enantiomer of mannitol, functioning as a natural osmolyte, metabolite, and compatible solute in many organisms.

First Aid Measures for Mannitol

1. If inhaled (powder form), move the person exposed to Mannitol to fresh air; if breathing is difficult or respiratory symptoms develop, seek medical attention.
2. If in eyes, rinse Mannitol cautiously with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes, remove contact lenses if present and easy to do, and get medical attention if eye irritation persists.
3. If swallowed in large amounts (food-grade Mannitol), monitor for gastrointestinal symptoms such as diarrhea or bloating; if severe discomfort or signs of dehydration occur, seek medical advice.

1. Store Mannitol powder or bulk material in a well-closed container in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and moisture, as Mannitol is stable in the dry state.
2. For Mannitol intravenous solutions (such as 25% injection), store at room temperature; if crystallization occurs, crystals may be dissolved by placing the vial in a hot water bath at 60-80°C with occasional shaking, then cool to body temperature before use.
3. Mannitol solutions are stable and can be autoclaved repeatedly with no adverse physical or chemical effects, and Mannitol does not undergo Maillard reactions.
