What’s Stannous oxalate used for?

1. Stannous oxalate is mainly used as a catalyst in esterification reactions, a catalyst for polyurethane gels, a fabric dyeing agent, a hydrogenation catalyst for coal, an additive for electroplating solutions.

2. Stannous oxalate can also be used for the development of blueprint printing paper, an activating agent in non-washing soldering flux, and a complexing agent for preparing transparent conductive films.

Where does Stannous oxalate come from?

1. Stannous oxalate is a synthetic inorganic compound produced by reacting stannous chloride (SnCl₂) with oxalic acid (H₂C₂O₄) in a precipitation reaction: SnCl₂ + H₂C₂O₄ → SnC₂O₄ + 2HCl .
2. In industrial settings, Stannous oxalate is produced by reacting stannous chloride with potassium oxalate in a controlled environment, with pH adjusted to 6-7, followed by heating to 35-40°C, then filtering, washing, and drying the precipitate .
3. Stannous oxalate appears as colorless crystals with a density of 3.56, melting point of 280°C, and decomposes on heating to form tin dioxide (SnO₂) and carbon monoxide .

1. Stannous oxalate is classified with hazard phrase R21/22 (harmful in contact with skin and if swallowed), with an oral LD50 of 3620 mg/kg in rats, and GHS07 warning symbol .
2. When handling Stannous oxalate, wear appropriate safety goggles, gloves, protective clothing, and positive pressure self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) .
3. Stannous oxalate is non-combustible but may decompose upon heating to produce corrosive and/or toxic fumes; use water, carbon dioxide, foam, or powder for extinguishing fires involving Stannous oxalate .
